Since its founding in 1974, Arts Access Victoria has established itself as the driving force behind an inclusive and accessible arts and cultural sector in Victoria.
Arts Access Victoria is the state’s leading arts and disability organisation, representing one of the largest demographic/interest groups in the Victorian community, people with disability and people experiencing mental illness.
For 40 years, we have been dedicated to extending the cultural participation of people with disability as artists, arts workers and audiences. We achieve this aim by:
- challenging definitions of culture so art produced by and about people with disability achieves greater recognition, support and appreciation;
- facilitating meaningful and sustainable career pathways for artists and arts workers with a disability within the community and the arts and cultural sector; and
- fostering the understanding and uptake of inclusive practices by the community arts and cultural development sector.
Each year, we deliver more than 25 multi-artform projects together with 1300 artists with disability. Our programs are of the highest quality, representing dynamic collaborations with established and emerging artists with a disability and enjoyed by audiences of more than 80,000.
Our inclusive programs have also resulted in more than 150 enduring community partnerships, characterised by respect for the artist and their creative expression. Without exception these formative partnerships give expression to the artists’ vision and art-making process in a way that challenges community perceptions of disability and extends art forms.
Working in partnership with others ensures our work is informed by many perspectives, that artistic practice is enriched through alliances and cooperation, and that the ways in which industry works is constructively challenged and transformed.
