Boxed In: Daniel Coulson

peoples faces are drawn onto cardboard boxes.

Danial Coulson, Boxed In

Boxed In is a public art installation by artist Daniel Coulson, showcasing portraits of those in supported living struggling with mental illness and homelessness. A series of charcoal portraits have been created on cardboard boxes.

The works are displayed outside and exposed to external elements that will weather them; a process signifying an erosion of identity and sense of self. This process will be documented and added to the artist’s website.

With regard to materials Daniel notes: ‘When I moved into Supported Independent Living, I did not have many supplies. The only large surface I had was a cardboard box. At first I thought it was a horrible surface to draw on because of all the corrugated grooves, but after finishing it, I really liked how those grooves and imperfections looked. It gave the piece a good feeling. I also enjoyed the fact that it was not a flat surface, that there was another dimension I could draw on’.
