Artist Statement

Marc Sorbello’s art practice is inspired by colour and imagination and a passion for popular culture. Sorbello creates vibrant drawings with pastels, pencil colour, and watercolour. His drawings merge cartoon characters, architectural motifs, and references drawn from interior design. His works are playful and expressive and invite viewers into richly layered worlds. The familiar imagery in his work is transformed through his unique perspective.

Sorbello’s drawings use bold colour palettes and an intuitive approach to mark-making. Cartoon figures, decorative patterns, and imagined spaces coexist within the compositions. They feel both nostalgic and contemporary. The use of colour is unapologetically joyful. He creates works that celebrate creativity, humour, and the pleasure of looking.

Across his broader artistic practice, Sorbello works between visual art, music, and performance. He has exhibited in many group exhibitions. His illustrations have been published as a colouring book and a deck of cards. He has also performed at Arts Centre Melbourne, the Bowery Theatre and La Mama. Sorbello brings the same energy and sense of play to his performances that defines his visual work.
