Raquel Fasano

an abstract artwork made out of blues and reds.

Raquel Fasano

Raquel is a Deaf artist based in Naarm (Melbourne) that expresses herself through painting and drawing as her main mediums. Visual art in all its forms has been a treasured part of her life ever since she can remember. Particularly, she is drawn to abstraction and surrealism during the creative process, in recognising the potential for human connection through sharing diverse interpretations of ambiguity.  When the world we see is framed by the lenses of our idiosyncratic perceptions, experiences, and language – the abstract gently nudges us towards conversations around how these layers shape the unique meanings we create. And just like many Deaf people do, Raquel has travelled a tumultuous path of identity realisation. During this time, art has been her saving grace. Playfully embellishing the obscure and absurd opened a door to an explorative journey towards cherishing a part of herself that once felt like an alien on Earth, wearing a human mask.
